My friend, Merill Comeau, was a member of Lowell Fiber Studios. She now has her own studio in Maynard, MA. She works on a large scale, with mostly reclaimed fiber. She collages, prints, and paints her fabrics, and recreates them in stunning images of nature. Merill's new show opens today at the Arnold Arboretum. Check out this lovely interview for more.

Fab Fabrics - one more week to go

With a new trusty camera I went to the next evening of classes. The students worked on collage with fusibles and acrylics while Gershwin played and Vox One sang.

 

I brought is a variety of fusibles, as well as glue and acrylic medium.  We made collages from scraps. As always, it's amazing and delightful to watch materials take new shape at the hands my wonderful students. Everyone has such a personal voice. One student has taken sample from each week and turned them into small quilts. Here is her piece from the week we did thermofax screen printing:

 

We got so involved we didn't have time at the end of class to put work up  on the wall, but here's Helen and Helena, deep in their work:

Fab Fabrics

 Fabulous Fabrics met again last night at the Arlington Center for the Arts. My students are wonderful: energetic, fun, creative.

They bring tremendous focus to each class.  Last night I introduced them to thermofax screens.

. Each student received at least on screen of her own design, plus I brought in some from my own library. The images above are from a book of ancient kimono designs. The flock of birds is one I created.

Much more exciting work resulted, but my camera did not fully recover from its trip through the wash.
